Should ‘undress’ apps be banned?

In the age of rapidly advancing technology, concerns about privacy and consent have taken centre stage. Recently, the emergence of realistic AI-generated ‘undress’ apps has sparked discussions about the ethical implications surrounding intimate content.

Laws can play a pivotal role in safeguarding individuals from potential harm in the digital realm. However, as yet there are no laws criminalising the creation of such content. California’s Senate Bill 784 has taken steps in the right direction. This criminalizes the distribution of fake pornographic content without the depicted person’s consent. This legislation sets a precedent for protecting individuals from the misuse of AI technology for malicious purposes.

Whilst law are essential at policy level, the phrase ‘prevention is better than the cure’, always springs to mind. Incorporating discussions into relationships and sex education lessons has never been more pressing. Reportedly, many images chosen for the ‘undressing’ originate from social media. Yet, another cruel reminder of insisting our young people are aware of privacy settings. I do wonder at times, if we will come full circle. Will generation alpha (born 2010-2014), begin to resist social media? Will we see a rise of ‘anti social mediarites’ who do not become a part of the online world? Or, is the grip of instant gratification too strong?
